What ruqyah is, and how it should be conducted
Ruqyah shariah is recitation of the Quran over a person seeking healing. The verses used are well established — Al-Fatihah, Ayat al-Kursi, the last two surahs, and passages from Surah al-Baqarah among them — and the practice itself is uncontroversial within Islamic tradition. It is recitation and prayer, and it belongs to anyone who can recite.
That last point is the one most often obscured. Self-ruqyah — reciting over yourself, or a family member reciting — is what scholars generally encourage, and it costs nothing. A practitioner is useful for assessment, for the initial sessions, and for teaching the practice properly. A practitioner who positions themselves as permanently necessary, with escalating fees and warnings about what happens if you stop, has departed from the tradition.
There are practices sold as ruqyah that are not. Taweez of unknown or non-Quranic content, instructions to break with normal religious obligations, demands for large payments, and treatment that involves force or harm to the person all fall outside it and should be refused. Several clients arrive here having encountered exactly this, and part of the work is simply explaining what proper practice looks like.
As throughout this site, medical care comes first. Ruqyah is used traditionally alongside medicine, not instead of it, and the Prophetic tradition itself encourages seeking treatment. Where symptoms suggest a treatable condition, you will be told to see a doctor before any course of recitation begins.

A clear, caring path
How ruqyah is conducted here
Assessment comes first, with medical causes considered before anything else. Recitation is then performed over a course of sessions, and self-ruqyah is taught so that the practice becomes yours rather than something you must keep returning for.
Assess, with medicine first
The account is heard and medical causes considered seriously. Where a doctor is what is needed, that is said before any course of recitation is arranged.
Perform the recitation
The established verses are recited over the person, and over water and oil for continued use at home, across a course of sessions rather than a single event.
Teach self-ruqyah
You are taught the verses and the method so you and your family can continue independently, which is the outcome the tradition actually intends.
