Why this needs the most careful handling of all
Of everything on this site, this is the category where a careless practitioner can do the most harm. The symptoms families describe as jinn disturbance — voices, episodes of altered behaviour, seizures, sleep paralysis, sudden aversion to prayer, speaking in an unfamiliar manner — overlap almost exactly with epilepsy, psychosis, severe sleep disorder and dissociative conditions.
Every one of those is treatable. People have died, and many more have lost years, because a treatable illness was addressed with ritual instead of medicine. Master Vijay Ram's position is firm: where these symptoms are present, a doctor is involved first, and no course of spiritual treatment proceeds in place of medical assessment. Families who do not want to hear this are told it anyway.
Sleep paralysis deserves particular mention because it accounts for a large share of these enquiries. Waking unable to move, with a sense of a presence in the room and often crushing pressure on the chest, is a well-documented and common sleep phenomenon. It is terrifying, it is harmless, and it has been interpreted as a spirit presence in essentially every culture — which is understandable, and is not what it is.
Where medical causes have been properly excluded and a genuine disturbance remains, treatment is through recitation — ruqyah for Muslim clients, using the established verses, over a course of sessions rather than a single event. Protection follows, and the household is taught the ongoing practice. Nothing dramatic, nothing coercive, and nothing that conflicts with your faith.

A clear, caring path
How this is approached
Medical assessment comes first, without exception. What remains after genuine medical causes are excluded is then assessed, and treated through recitation within your own tradition, with protection set afterwards. Sleep paralysis and several treatable conditions account for many enquiries.
Medical assessment first
Where seizures, voices, altered behaviour or blackouts are present, a doctor is involved before anything else. This is not negotiable and it is not a formality.
Assess what remains
Once treatable causes have been properly considered, the account and the household situation are assessed carefully to establish what, if anything, remains unexplained.
Treat through recitation and protect
Ruqyah or the equivalent traditional rite is performed over a course of sessions, followed by protection for the person and the home and a practice the family can maintain.
Do any of these sound familiar?
What families describe
Please involve a doctor first where any of these are present.
- Episodes of altered behaviour the person does not remember
- Waking unable to move, with a sense of presence in the room
- Sudden strong aversion to prayer or to entering a particular room
- A voice or presence experienced by one household member
- Disturbance concentrated in one room of the house
- Symptoms that repeated medical investigation has genuinely not explained
