What the jaap is, and the line it does not cross
The Mahamrityunjaya mantra comes from the Rigveda and is addressed to Shiva as Tryambaka. It is the tradition's principal recitation for healing, protection and longevity, and a jaap is its repetition a fixed number of times — commonly 11,000, 51,000 or 125,000 depending on what the situation calls for, held over days or weeks.
It is most often requested by a family for someone who is seriously ill: a parent in hospital, a child undergoing treatment, someone facing surgery. Occasionally it is undertaken for protection during a period a chart marks as difficult, or after a serious accident. The recitation may be performed by Master Vijay Ram, by the family, or by both together, which many find more meaningful.
The limit is the same one that governs every health-related page here, and it is not a formality. This is offered alongside medical care. It is never a reason to delay treatment, refuse surgery, or stop medication, and any suggestion of that kind should be refused wherever it comes from. Master Vijay Ram states this to every family who asks for a jaap.
Within that limit, what it offers a family is real. Illness leaves people with nothing to do, and the helplessness is its own affliction. A jaap gives the household a task, a structure and a way of being useful during a stretch of time that otherwise consists of waiting. Families frequently describe that as what carried them through, whatever the outcome.

A clear, caring path
How a jaap is arranged
A jaap is arranged by establishing the situation and the appropriate count, confirming that medical care is already in place, and then performing the recitation. It is undertaken alongside treatment and is never a reason to delay or replace it.
Establish the situation and count
Who the jaap is for and what is happening, which determines the count — commonly 11,000, 51,000 or 125,000 — and the period over which it is held.
Confirm medical care is in place
That treatment is underway and will continue. The jaap accompanies medical care, and this is confirmed rather than assumed before anything is arranged.
Perform the recitation
The jaap is held over the agreed period, with family members taking part where they wish, and concluded with a havan where the count and situation call for one.
Do any of these sound familiar?
When families request a jaap
Always alongside medical treatment, never as a substitute for it.
- A family member is seriously unwell or in hospital
- Surgery is scheduled and the family wants to do something
- A long illness is wearing the whole household down
- Recovery from a serious accident is underway
- A chart shows a difficult period affecting health
- The family wants to participate rather than only be told about it
